The calendar has turned to October, and the competition across the Tier 1 Hockey Federation is showing no signs of slowing down.
As teams return to the ice this weekend, the early-season picture continues to develop. Some clubs are looking to extend winning streaks, others are trying to bounce back from close losses, and every weekend brings another opportunity to make a statement.
Last weekend delivered dramatic overtime finishes, last-second winners, impressive comebacks and standout individual performances across the federation.
Now, another busy weekend awaits, highlighted by a 16U Game of the Week showdown between Pittsburgh Stars and Team Maryland.

The Pittsburgh Stars will travel to Maryland for a Saturday night meeting at 8:10 PM before returning to the ice Sunday morning for the featured Game of the Week.
That quick turnaround adds another layer of excitement to the matchup. Both teams will have an opportunity to make adjustments after Saturday’s contest, with little time between games to prepare for the rematch.
The Stars enter the weekend with a busy October schedule and an opportunity to build momentum against a familiar THF opponent. Team Maryland, meanwhile, will look to take advantage of home ice and put together a strong weekend of its own.
With the 16U division producing some of the federation’s most competitive hockey last weekend, Sunday’s matchup provides another opportunity for two clubs to make their mark.

Close Games and Clutch Moments Last Weekend
The opening weekend of October delivered plenty of excitement across the THF.
A total of 109 games were completed October 2–4, with 25 decided by a single goal. Nine games required overtime, while three finished tied.
Some of the weekend’s most memorable moments came with almost no time remaining.
At 13U, Mercer Chiefs and Rockets Hockey Club Premier combined for 17 goals in a thrilling 9-8 finish. Rockets scored three times in just 38 seconds to take an 8-7 lead before Koppany Nagy-Melykuti scored his fifth goal of the game with 12.7 seconds remaining to give Mercer the victory.
The drama continued at 16U, where Notre Dame Hockey Academy and Flyers Elite-BBNA played back-to-back overtime games. Notre Dame claimed the first meeting before Flyers Elite answered the following day, with Grayson Schiavoni scoring the winner with just 5.6 seconds left in overtime.
At 14U, Springfield Aces erased a three-goal deficit against Hartford Jr. Wolfpack, scoring four unanswered goals to secure a 4-3 victory.
Those performances demonstrated just how quickly momentum can shift.
With another weekend ahead, teams will look to turn those lessons into results.
Teams to Watch
Several teams enter the weekend after impressive performances across the federation.
Mercer Chiefs 14U put together one of the strongest weekends in the league, finishing 4-0. Strong goaltending played a major role, including a 41-save performance from James Caton in a 2-1 victory and 43 saves from Dustin Zoino in a 4-2 win.
At 12U, Mid-Fairfield and Red Bank Generals each finished 3-0. Mid-Fairfield received a particularly strong performance in net from Gage Hardy, who recorded two shutouts.
Rockets Hockey Club 9U also completed a perfect three-game weekend, with Christian Cox scoring seven goals.
Elsewhere, CT Jr. Rangers 15U National went 2-0 behind four goals from Eli Wizda, while PBK 15U picked up two victories against PAL Jr. Islanders.
Those clubs have established some early momentum, but maintaining it will be the challenge as the schedule continues.
For other teams, this weekend represents another opportunity to turn competitive performances into victories and begin climbing the standings.
Players to Watch
The latest THF Players of the Week featured outstanding performances from skaters and goaltenders across the federation.
At 9U, NY Dynamo’s Braxtyn Harpin recorded four goals and one assist in two games, while CT Jr. Rangers’ Mason Angel Macleod finished with five goals and one assist at 10U.
At 11U, Alexander Gibson of CT Chiefs scored six goals and added an assist, while NYC Hockey Club’s Asher Vecsler demonstrated his playmaking ability with nine assists in three games at 12U.
At 14U, Henry Tansill of NYC Hockey Club recorded three goals and three assists across four games.
The older divisions featured impressive performances as well. Cyclones Academy’s Charles Overeem registered four goals and three assists in two games at 16U, while NY Arrows’ Jacob Kosokhar scored twice at 18U, including an overtime winner.
Between the pipes, Woodbridge Wolfpack’s Benjamin Stevens recorded a perfect save percentage and a shutout at 11U, while Mercer Chiefs Premier’s CJ Young posted a .980 save percentage and a shutout across two games at 16U.
With another weekend of hockey approaching, these players will look to continue their strong performances while others aim to become the next names making headlines.
Every Weekend Brings a New Opportunity
As October progresses, teams across the THF are beginning to establish their identities.
The opening weeks have provided valuable experience, but the season is still young enough for teams to change their trajectory with a strong weekend.
Last weekend’s results showed just how little can separate opponents. Seven of the 15 games played at 16U were decided by a single goal, including four that required overtime.
That level of competition makes consistency increasingly important.
Some teams have found success through strong defensive play and goaltending. Others have relied on offensive depth, timely scoring and the ability to battle back from deficits.
Whatever the formula, the challenge remains the same: finding ways to win and building on those results.
With plenty of hockey still ahead, the early standings are beginning to take shape, but there’s no shortage of opportunities for teams to make their move.
